Two More Shows Become Part of the Preparedness Radio Network

This guest post is by John Wesley Smith of DestinySurvival.com and DestinySurvival Radio.

I’ve mention in a previous post that the Preparedness Radio Network (PRN) on Blog Talk Radio has grown by leaps and bounds. There are over two dozen show hosts now.

Hugh Vail of Tomorrow’s Harvest is the latest to join the PRN lineup with the “TH Insider Report” on Wednesday evenings. Find out what you need to know about long term food storage and more related to prepping.

Sylvia Britton of the Christian Homekeeper Network hosts a show on Thursday evenings called 21st Century Homekeeper. It’s all about old-fashioned skills and old-fashioned living.

PRN strives to put you in touch with experts, authors, and practitioners of preparedness, survivalism, self-reliance, and urban and ex-urban homesteading. It’s all aimed at boosting your prepping endeavors.

Don’t forget, all Preparedness Radio Network shows are archived so you can download them and listen at your convenience––free of charge. You’re invited to go to Be Prepared Radio to discover these two new shows and a whole lot more.

What Time Is It?

This guest post is by John Wesley Smith of DestinySurvival.com. He also hosts DestinySurvival Radio on the Preparedness Radio Network.

A couple mornings ago, as my daughter left the house, she said she’d be back around 11:45. I replied, “How about being back by a quarter till twelve.”

She said that would work, too.

In turn, I said it all depends on which side you’re looking at the clock. She laughed.

Of course, to understand my attempt at humor, you have to envision a clock with hands. Fewer of us have those any more. Everything has a digital readout. Eleven forty-five is simply 11:45.

At a fellowship after church the other night, I noticed my wife was wearing a wristwatch. I wear one all the time. But how old fashioned! So many tell time by their cell phones today.

This is one small example of how dependent on technology we’ve become. Maybe someone from a few centuries ago would have said watches were modern technology compared to the humble sundial.

Incidentally, in case you’re curious, the science of sundials is rather complex. That is, if you’re going to have one that’s accurate.

But my overall point is simply this. Our dependence on technology for something as commonplace as telling time is a symptom of our dependence on so many devices today.

This is one reason Doctor Prepper wrote Making the Best of Basics Times may change, but the basics don’t. We’re far removed from generations past. Their skill level depended far more on their own resourcefulness.

They were closer to the land and the rhythms of nature. They were more closely connected with the things that made everyday life what it was, including the food they ate.

You may be aware that Doctor Prepper’s book is available in digital form. There’s nothing wrong with having it in that format. Get a copy to read on your computer and ride the technology horse as long as you can.

But don’t forget about the print edition. Should technology fail one day, it will still be there for you when you need it.

If I said now’s the time to get your copy of Making the Best of Basics, would you look at your wristwatch or cell phone?

Is Doctor Prepper’s Book in Your Local Library?

This guest post is by John Wesley Smith of DestinySurvival.com.

If your local library doesn’t yet have a copy of Making the Best of Basics, there’s now a way to make that possible. It helps both your library and your community. Your library gets a big discount when ordering the book. Plus, they can help library patrons get a discount when they get their own copies.

A little while back Doctor Prepper interviewed Rebecca J. Ensign of Gold Leaf Press on his Doctor Prepper Show. Gold Leaf Press is an independent publishing company who wants to help promote Doctor Prepper’s preparedness message nation wide.

Ms. Ensign has made a special arrangement with Doctor Prepper to make his book available through libraries and nonprofit organizations. Thanks to this exclusive and innovative discount and incentive program, such organizations can earn donations while enabling patrons or members in local communities to get better educated and prepared.

When your library uses a LOA code to order Doctor Prepper’s book, they receive a 25% single copy discount on each copy they order. They also get complimentary Preparedness e-books and materials, which they’re free to download, print and circulate.

The library also gets good P.R. from participating because they’ll receive a poster to display publicly. And a press release is sent to the local newspaper announcing how the library is helping your community to become better prepared for any type of disaster/emergency.

Your library also becomes eligible for a donation from the Gold Leaf Press Get Ready! Network. We all know how much libraries need funds these days, so this is a win-win situation.

But that’s not all. There’s also a 20% patron discount which patrons can use when they buy their own copies of Making the Best of Basics. All a library patron needs to do to get the discount is use the library’s LOA code.

The only thing your library needs to do to become involved is to order at least one copy of Making the Best of Basics, now in its 12th edition. Your librarian can order online or contact Gold Leaf Press to make the necessary arrangements.

The web site with all the details is at http://bestofbasics12thedition.org.

Pass the word about this great opportunity to your local librarian or other nonprofit organization. Help both your library and fellow community members to discover today what it really means to get prepared!

Now you can view it on your computer. Plus, you get bonus material when you order the no-wait/no-freight electronic version.

There will be more to come on this soon, but for now, you can click here for the Family Preparedness Handbook.

Our Preparedness Radio Network on Blog Talk Radio has grown by leaps and bounds. We have a total of 25 show hosts, most of whom broadcast live weekly, discussing various aspects of a preparedness lifestyle. You can gain a wealth of great info to boost your prepping efforts by listening to these experts, authors, and practitioners of preparedness, survivalism, self-reliance, and urban and ex-urban homesteaders.

All Preparedness Radio Network shows are archived so you can download them and listen at your convenience––free of charge. You’re invited to go to DestinySurvival Radio on Thursday afternoons at 1:00 PM CST. I’ve interviewed guests about long-term food storage, earthquake preparedness, prepping for people with disabilities, and more. You can find out more here.

I look forward to sharing more with you about other shows and their hosts. I’ll also be telling you more about Making the Best of Basics. And maybe I’ll toss in a few other odds and ends about prepping, too.

As I like to tell my e-mail subscribers, “Have a great day, and keep prepping!”

Be Prepared Radio: Feedback We LOVE to Hear!

Yesterday we received a short note from one of our listeners just before the Doctor Prepper Show was to air on the Preparedness Radio Network. We couldn’t resist passing it on to you because it expresses our hopes and dreams about what can and will be accomplished in a POSITIVE way to help people get prepared through our new internet radio station and website, BePreparedRadio.com.

Doctor, I just want to comment on your radio shows. WOW! I have listened to your shows from the beginning, and it just keeps getting better and better. It was great hearing you alone, but you hit a home run with your idea of letting other people have their own shows also. I love the variety. But don’t you ever decide to give up your air-time, because you are still the one I look forward to hearing the most. Great job!

Simply Simplifying

A wonderful article on voluntary simplicity by our newest guest contributor, Tess Pennington, who will be Doctor Prepper’s special guest Wednesday night at 8PM CDT on the Doctor Prepper show. For more information about our radio shows and to subscribe to our podcasts, visit http://bepreparedradio.com.

There are times in your life when you realize that things are not as they should be. A vital component is missing in your day to day life, but you are unsure what it is. There is so much chaos and clutter spinning around you that nothing seems to make sense the way it used to.

You realize that the lifestyle to which you’ve become so accustomed is a necessary evil, a constant struggle between the life you want to achieve and the life you have to give up right now to achieve it. But you don’t have to live your life dreaming of what it could be – you can stop spinning and start simplifying right now!

It starts with a willingness to change and the willingness to realize that you need to get back to basics and focus on the things that matter most, not at hopefully achieving those things at some time in the future, but right now.

Shifting Your Direction

Those who live a stress filled life tend to be very familiar with the Three C’s: Chaos, Clutter and Confusion. It does not make for a happy existence. In fact, it drags you and your spirit down. In plain words, it’s toxic. In order to avoid this altogether, start making minor changes in your life to naturally shift your perspective. Peter Holy, founder of 123 Feel Better, calls them micro movements. The key to achieving your goals, according to 123 Feel Better, is to break your goals down into their smallest, most manageable parts. Where you may feel tired or overworked attempting to achieve a single, massive goal in one fell swoop, simplifying that goal into micro movements will seem like you’re hardly working.

Realizing that you want to take this journey towards simplicity requires some preemptive planning on your part. To begin this, you must find some time to reflect and think about what is important and how to enhance those priorities. For example, if family is a main priority, start scheduling a designated family time. The football game can wait. Or, if you have been putting off planning your off-grid home, sit down with the family and start planning what you want your homestead to incorporate. Nothing should interfere with those designated priorities. Here are some additional tips.

  • Sit down and contemplate the priorities in your life. What matters most in your life? What can you live without?
  • Set short and long term goals to get to your simplified destination.
  • Break down each goal and create micro movements, or mini-goals, that will help you to achieve success
  • Take actionand start integrating your micro movements into your daily life.

6 Practical Tips to Simplify Your Life

After shifting your direction toward simplifying your life, you will find that you only need a few things to really make you happy. Somehow in the middle of everything, you realize that whatever void you had in yourself before, filling it with superfluous products, services and habits often leaves you feeling just the opposite – unfulfilled.

Many are adopting this voluntary simplicity. In fact, trend researcher Gerald Celente has been quoted in saying that “between 5%-7% of adults are pursuing some type of voluntary simplicity.” It should be no surprise, then, that the percentage of those who are simplifying their lives are also the same percentage of individuals who are prepping. Preppers are already practicing living a more simplified lifestyle. Here are a few tips to help you begin your road to a simpler life:

  • Simplify your finances - Having debt creates a lot of unwanted stress and uneasiness in your life. Start making steps to live within your means and start paying off any unnecessary debt. Do some research into what credit solutions seem right for you. There are websites available that can give tips on how to reduce debt. Creating a manageable budget can also be an invaluable tip to reducing credit and stress.
  • Simplify your life- Get back to the basics and downsize your life. Start weeding out the areas in your life that cause you pain, suffering and confusion. Sometimes you have to weed out those toxic friends, stop hanging out late at night in order to get up early, learn to say “no” to people. Over-committing yourself can also cause a build up of chaos. Start prepping! Preparing for emergencies beforehand creates a safety cushion to fall back on in case an emergency arises. It eliminates the headache of gathering supplies in a high stress environment. There are plenty of sources to start your preparedness journey.
  • De-clutter Your Home and Office – It’s easy to have those organized “catch all piles” laying in strategic places around the house. But the more clutter that piles up, the more disorganized things are in your life. Clutter brings an uneasiness to life. Make a short term goal to clear these piles out. If you are not using these items, then throw them away, give them away or sell these items in a garage sale.
  • Simplify your health – Research has shown that stress takes it’s toll on a body. Those who live a stress free life are more inclined to live longer, be healthier and overall pleased with their life. So, start getting some fresh air every day. Additionally, cutting back on those greasy junk food items is another way to clean and detoxify your body.
  • Rely on yourself – What a great concept! By relying on yourself, you will find freedom. This is the threshold to prepping. Once you realize that you can be self reliant, everything changes. Your goals change, your attitude changes, you change.
  • Feed your spirit – This is often a highly overlooked area. If you do not feed your spirit on a regular basis, it will not grow. That is the missing component in most of our lives. We forget how important this is. Try and do something every week to be at one with your spirit. Some people meditate, some pray, some go to Nature to be in thought, some climb mountains – find what brings you peace and continue doing it. Because, without a spiritual foundation, we are lost.

The Time/Energy Yield

In the spin cycle we call life, we spend our time and energy on work and other distractions that keep us from doing what we need to thrive. Rather than spending our time on what’s important in life and sitting back in quiet thought, we have to entertain ourselves with thoughtless television programming, gossip websites or magazines, etc. It’s important to relax, but these activities will not relax you. They will only stimulate you into not moving or thinking. Your time/energy yield is not a positive reflection of what you are trying to accomplish. An example of good time/energy yield would be: rather than exchanging your time for excessive work at the office to generate more money to buy more food at the store; take that time, and rather than going to the office, spend that time building and developing a home vegetable garden. You will use your time and energy to not only fulfill your consumptive needs, but you will be feeding your spiritual, emotional and physical wellness needs at the same time.

Starting Fresh

It’s a new day where anything is possible. Simplifying your life will create more room for you to do what you need to be at peace. I’ve read stories of people who dreamed of living near the water. So, in order to save money, they sold their McMansion, their gas guzzler truck and bought a boat. They found a creative solution to their problem that ended up being the right decision not only for their stress load, but also for their spirit.

Making the realization to simplify does not mean that you are giving up your life in order to live a life of poverty. Quite the contrary, it means to getting rid of the non-essentials that cloud your life. By ridding yourself of these non-essentials, you begin to clear the distortion and haze, and begin concentrating on the important things in life. This sensible lifestyle creates a well balanced and harmonious living environment. Think of it, you are deliberately taking the reins and slowing down your life to actually give yourself the opportunity to look at the beauty and treasures surrounding you.

Keeping it Simple: Gluten-Free Options for Preppers

A reader wrote: “I am Celiac as well. What type of grains would be the healthiest to grind other than wheat to make bread?”

Here’s a quick summary of gluten-free options for those diagnosed with Celiac Disease:

1. Safe Gluten-Free Foods

Not all grains contain gluten. “Wheat-free” does not mean gluten-free.

It’s important to read labels and contact the manufacturer for information if there’s any question whether a specific food contains gluten. The National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse (see information below) offers the following list of safe gluten-free foods:

  • Grain, starches, flour products, and breads made from these ingredients: buckwheat, rice, corn, potato, tapioca, bean, sorghum, soy, arrowroot, amaranth, teff, quinoa, millet, nut flours.
  • Cereals:
Hot cereals made with hominy, brown rice, white rice, buckwheat groats, millet, cornmeal, and quinoa flakes.
Cold cereals made with puffed corn, rice, millet, and other rice and/or corn cereals made with non-gluten ingredients.
  • Pastas made from rice and other non-gluten ingredients.

2. Foods You Should Avoid

  • Wheat (durum, semolina)
  • Rye
  • Barley
  • Spelt
  • Oats (oats do not contain gluten, but are sometimes contaminated with glutens during processing)
  • Triticale
  • Kamut
  • Farina

3. Watch out for Hidden Glutens

It’s relatively easy to avoid breads and other products made with grains that contain gluten, but sometimes gluten hides in other food ingredients.

  • Be cautious of foods containing textured vegetable protein (TVP), hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP), caramel color, soy sauce, malt flavoring. and modified food starch.
  • Products containing imitation seafood, vitamin supplements, and some prescription medicines often contain fillers made with gluten.

4. Creating A Gluten-Free Kitchen

With a little creativity, you can convert standard recipes to gluten-free recipes. Here are some ideas for substitution:

Instead of: flour-based thickeners
Substitute: cornstarch, arrowroot or sweet rice flour

Instead of: flour in baked goods
Substitute: gluten-free flours such as rice, potato or bean flours with the addition of small amounts of xanthan gum for texture

Instead of: 1 C. wheat flour
Substitute:

  • 7/8 C. rice flour
  • 5/8 C. potato starch flour
  • 1 C. soy flour plus ¼ C. potato starch flour
  • ½ C. soy flour plus ½ C. potato starch flour
  • 1 C. corn flour
  • 1 scant C. fine cornmeal
  • 1 C. gluten-free flour mix:
  • 2 parts white rice flour, 2/3 part potato starch flour and 1/3 part tapioca flour

5. Gluten-Free Products

Listed below are a few of the brands and product lines available at different grocery stores:

The Doctor is In! Organic Panic, Seed Buying Scams and the Formula for Value

Liz wrote:

Oh man,
I just plunked down $xxx dollars for two family pack seed banks from [...] and I’m second guessing myself. I do not see them recommended on your website. Furthermore, I found out that the seeds are NOT certified organic, which makes me a little suspicious because the company uses the word “organic” so much in their descriptions. Whadaya think, Dr.?

Doctor Prepper responds:

Liz:

I’m not sure from your description from whom you bought the seeds, so what I say will be generic; i.e., not directed at any specific dealer or distributor, but just some words of advice from my own experience. Seed prices are all over the ballpark–some are truly inexpensive and some are really expensive. It’s so easy for a seller’s talented artist to utilize words and graphics to excite he mind of the buyer! Colors, layout, words, and pictures can incite you to action and excite you to make a decision–when perhaps more investigation is needed.

But you know all that! The best thing about the Internet is its wide-ranging search ability–and we all ought to use it more. Comparison shopping is the key to value–not price. There are 3 parts to any consumer buying decision (in my opinion!):

  1. Quality
  2. Price
  3. Delivery

That is the formula for value. Quality is the main qualifier for my buying decision–will it do what I want to do with it and how badly do I need it to accomplish my greater goals? Then it’s price–can I afford it at this time and where is it in my hierarchy of needs? Then, when will I get it into my possession? That’s a lot to deal with on items about which you have little experience in a particular field or for a particular item.

Before you spend that much money, you should spend hours comparison shopping–noting what a specific sum of money will provide, and what you get for your investment–seed-by-seed or item-by-item comparing like items until you have the knowledge to make a good buying decision Then the remorse and or second-guessing goes away.

If a company has mis-represented their product, you should take recourse against them and get your money back. If they don’t treat you fairly, there are solutions for that, too.

I hope you can decide the appropriate thing to do to resolve this situation for your peace of mind.

Keeping It Simple: Seven Steps to Healthy Eating

Let’s GET REAL: How prepared will you truly be to survive tough times if you and/or your family are in poor health? The old saying, “You are what you eat,” may be hard to swallow, but so is the excess of drugs being pushed upon us by the pharmaceutical companies as the answer to all our ills. We need to get back to basics to regain our health, and the road to recovery starts with healthy eating.

Sue Becker, a recent guest on the Doctor Prepper Show and our newest contributor, offers this simple, 7-step approach to healthy eating:

Healthy Eating Simplified

by Sue Becker
(c) 2010 Used with permission.

In the realm of eating I see two extremes happening in America. On the one hand, meal time has been reduced to a drive through window or something from a box, that’s “ready in minutes”. Families just “don’t have time to cook anymore” On the other hand, healthy eating has become way too complicated, with many varying opinions on what is healthy and what is not.

In fact, have you ever thought about feeding your family more nutritious foods, but just did not know where to begin? Perhaps you have even bought one or two of the many books on the subject of healthy eating, only to find yourself more confused than enlightened. Well, do not feel alone. Twenty five percent of Americans say they are confused about what is healthy and what is not.

Many of us have found that as we search for answers we often find that even the “experts” do not agree on the subject of healthy eating. Raw food diet, low “carb” diet, fruit and vegetable juice diet, coupled with lists of “can’t haves”, leaves us asking the questions, “Does healthy eating really have to be this complicated?” “Does it have to be that different from what my family likes?” Or “Is there really anything wrong with good old meatloaf and mashed potatoes”?

The answer to these questions is, absolutely not! With just a few simple steps you can put meal time back in its proper perspective and serve healthy foods that you family will not only eat, but enjoy!

One basic principle, however, must prevail over our endeavors to change our eating habits. We must return to a diet consisting of “real” food. By “real” food, I mean food that is created by God to nourish our bodies and that is eaten in a form as close to the way God created it as possible. For example, eat an apple instead of an apple flavored fruit bar or a highly processed package of apple sauce. Eat real meats, real vegetables and real fruit. Choose real eggs and real butter. You do not have to become a vegetarian or change to a raw foods diet or become a meat eater for that matter. Just make real food choices from the many wonderful options that God has given us, that best suit your family’s likes and meets your body’s needs. The exciting part is you can begin today and even shop in the regular grocery store. Shop the perimeter of the store to find the real food. The important thing to remember is to just “GET REAL”.

With this basic principle in mind, there are a few specific steps you can make that will bring drastic and noticeable improvements to the health of your family.

  • Step 1: Eat Real Bread – Buy a Grain Mill -There is one exception to finding real food in the grocery store and that is BREAD! Of all the foods God has given us, bread, or food made from grain, is the most altered by man. The grocery shelves are filled with denatured, processed grain products. Real bread, however, is bread made from freshly milled whole grains. Without making your own bread and grain foods it will be difficult to obtain real bread or the remarkable health benefits it will bring.

For our ancestors of 100 years ago, whole grains and real bread were the staples of their diet. They did not suffer the cancer, heart disease, or diabetes as we do today. In fact, in 1900 America was the healthiest of 93 countries surveyed. By 1920 it had dropped to 2nd and thereafter America’s health continued to rapidly decline. Today, America is the world leader in chronic sickness and disease as well as obesity. What happened to cause such drastic changes in America’s health?

Prior to the 1900’s most bread baked in this country was done so at home. Grain was milled at the local miller or homes had mills of their own so that flour could be milled as needed and used before it spoiled. The bran and germ portions of the whole grain contain many vital nutrients to good health that oxidize quickly once the flour is milled and the germ portion contains oils that go rancid as well. In the late 1800’s steel rolling mills were invented that sifted the bran and germ portions away, leaving white flour that would not spoil. Thinking this a wonderful discovery, steel rolling mills soon replaced the local millers and by 1910 white flour and white bread became food for the common man.

Three diseases became epidemic immediately and health officials traced the problem to the new white flour that had taken over the market. They urged the millers to put the bran and germ portions back into the flour but the millers refused, choosing instead to enrich the white flour. For the 25-30 nutrients lost by removing the bran and germ, only 4 were replaced. Unfortunately, the synthetic vitamins and minerals used to “enrich” or “fortify” foods are often forms that our bodies can not readily absorb.

This is a significant turning point in America’s health history. You see, white flour and white bread have always been around; however, its consumption was reserved for the wealthy or royalty. Royalty could afford servants, who would sift out the bran and germ portion to make white flour “dainties and delicacies” as mentioned in Proverbs 23:3. Proverbs 23:1-2 warns us that this is deceitful food and that we should even “put a knife to our throats lest we be given to gluttony”.

The invention of the steel rolling mills made white flour available to the common people, rich and poor alike. By 1920, bread and bread products had drastically changed and America’s health has been declining ever since. Today, most of what we eat has been so altered by processing and preserving it can hardly be called bread at all.

America is now the fattest nation in the world, evidence that we are truly “given to gluttony”. We are now the world leader in heart disease, cancer and diabetes. Asthma has increased by 200% in the past 10 years and the number of children with type II diabetes (previously called “adult onset) is alarming. Americans, old and young alike, are dependent on antihistamines and allergy relief medications and constipation is no longer an old person’s problem.

Recent government studies state that whole grains reduce the risk of these now common health issues, yet God knew all along. In Deuteronomy 24:6 God instructed the Israelites in wise business practices. It was customary to take a pledge from someone when making a loan. God declared, however, that “no man shall take a mill or upper millstone in pledge, for he would be taking a life in pledge”. (emphasis mine) God knew the importance of bread for maintaining life and health, therefore the capacity to mill grain was equated with the very life of a person.

Since 1992 I have been teaching on the health benefits of grinding your own grains to make your own breads. We have heard literally thousands of testimonies of improved health from this one dietary change alone. In all my years of study of healthy eating and trying many different ways to improve my health and the health of my family, I have never seen one change bring such immediate and noticeable results as when we began milling our grain and making bread. The best part is the bread tastes good and will have your family begging for more!

How important is this first step to improving your family’s health? IT IS YOUR LIFE!

Though this first step may seem hard, it is definitely worth it. The immediate improvements in health will not only encourage you to go on in your journey, but will also you give you the energy you need to move forward. If you never make any other changes in your family’s diet, than real bread, you will still experience many health improvements. But, there are a few more simple steps you can make that will bring even more positive results.

  • Step 2: Drink More Water – Most of us have become very concerned about the food we eat, but neglect the importance of what we drink. A person can fast from food for as long as 40 days and not die, yet a fast from water for longer than 3 days brings death.

Water makes up 65-75% of the human body and is essential for life and the proper functioning of the body. Most of us, however, do not clearly understand its life-giving role, nor do we drink enough.

Valuable nutrients, as well as oxygen, are continually brought into our cells by water, while it also carries waste products away from our cells. This process of transporting and eliminating is essential for the health and function of every cell in our bodies. Necessary nutrients vary from cell type to cell type but the transport vehicle remains the same – WATER.

Since water is instrumental in flushing toxins and waste from the body, if the body does not receive enough water these toxins build up and hinder the proper function of the cell. Both our digestive and eliminative processes are adversely affected by the build up of toxins. Sugar and chemical laden beverages, such as teas, coffee, soft drinks, and fruit juice drinks (even the 100% juice drinks) do not have this cleansing potential. Since we would certainly not consider cleansing the outside of our bodies with one of these beverages, why do we think they can replace pure clean water for cleansing the inside of our bodies?

Step 2 then in our quest for better health involves replacing the sugar filled beverages we consume with water. A great place to start is first thing in the morning. Begin each day with an 8 ounce glass of water, before anything else goes in your mouth. I call this “priming the pump”. Morning is your body’s main cleansing time. Drinking a glass of water will get things moving. I have noticed also that drinking water first thing in the morning enables me to distinguish between thirst and hunger. It will actually help you to want more water throughout the day.

  • Step 3: Friendly Bacteria – The more I study the human body the more I am amazed at the importance of replenishing the good bacteria that lives in our colon. These “good guys” play a vital role in our immune function. This “friendly flora” suppresses the growth of pathogenic bacteria and yeast. America is one of the few countries that does not have a cultured or fermented food as part of its daily diet. By cultured food, I mean yogurt and kefir, both fermented dairy products, or a fermented vegetable such as sauerkraut. Yogurt and kefir are the easiest foods to incorporate into a healthy eating program but they of course need to be “real” – containing at least 5 different live active bacteria and not heavily sweetened, flavored or colored. A good plain yogurt or kefir can easily be blended into a fresh fruit smoothie or sweetened with honey and frozen fruit, it can be eaten like ice cream. I enjoy eating yogurt with my granola instead of milk or at breakfast, I often serve yogurt and fruit as a side dish. Try to consume at least a ½ cup every day.

If dairy allergies are a problem I would supplement with a good “probiotic” which can be purchased at any health food store.
  • Step 4: Fresh Fruits and Vegetables – Making a conscientious effort to eat more fruits and vegetables will do a lot to improve your bowel health as well as supply your body with many of the vitamins and minerals so important to good health. Begin to replace sugary snacks with a piece of fresh fruit. I have noticed that hungry people, especially children, will eat the most convenient thing. Make fruit more convenient than chips and crackers. Try to have a fresh vegetable, cooked or raw, at least once a day.
  • Step 5: Get Rid of the Junk – At some point we have to make the decision to get rid of the junk in our lives. I am not a purest by any stretch of the imagination, but my little junky splurges are rare these days. I found that by eating real food, especially real bread, my craving for sweets and junk food have greatly diminished. Begin to read labels. Make wiser choices, choosing real food over processed foods. Again make real foods more available than less healthy ones. A great question to ask yourself before partaking of these little “dainties and delicacies” is “Will this food add to my health or take it away?”
  • Step 6: Exercise – You may be wondering what exercise has to do with healthy eating, but physical activity is critically important to the function of both our lymph and elimination system. So our health is not only about what we eat, but also about what we do!

God created our bodies to work. Unfortunately we find ourselves in an era that does not typically require much physical labor in the work force. Most of us now have to “work” at exercising. Regular exercise does not have to be complicated, just regular. A nice long walk can do wonders for your physical health. Find and activity you enjoy and “JUST DO IT”!!
  • Step 7: Rest – “And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done; and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. And God blessed the seventh day, set it apart as His own, and hallowed it because on it God rested from all His work which He had created and done.”
    Genesis 2: 2-3

We should not get legalistic here, but we must find time to rest, each day, as well as weekly. Plan your days and weeks so you can look on your accomplishments as God did and say “It is good” – then sit down, relax or better still – turn out the lights (and computer) and go to bed!!!

Will changing the way you eat, or live, reverse or prevent life threatening diseases? Maybe – Maybe not, but everyone should experience improved health when we begin to give our bodies what they need. This is not rocket science. God lovingly caused the earth to produce food that would perfectly nourish the bodies He created. Man can’t improve on God. It’s that SIMPLE!
