The Shepherd School – Jul 23,2013

Survival Punk is a blog created by James Burnette. James takes a rational, creative approach to self-reliance, applying a punk DIY ethic to survivalism without any of the fear mongering or “tinfoil hattery” found in some other areas of the survivalist movement. The Survival Punk blog covers a huge range of his projects, both success and failures along with a healthy bit of myth busting. He also provides a ton of dirt cheap creative solutions to common prepping needs and does a great job of integrating the paleo lifestyle with the prepping lifestyle. The Shepherd School – Jul 22,2013

Preparedness is about making small sacrifices in normal times so that you do not have to make huge sacrifices in times of scarcity (at least in this hosts mind) – its not just about buying beans, bullets, and bandages – its also about learning, training, and building capability. David has spent a lot of time taking skills and concepts learned in his professional field of emergency management and relating it to his familys personal preparedness. One of those things that relates to is knowledge of critical incident stress. Critical Incident Stress, and Critical Incident Management is directly related to long-term responder performance – and un-managed stress can have debilitating effects on the individual and the group. In todays episode David talks about what it is, how to deal with it and how it relates to acute stress brought on by the Fight or Flight response. He introduces the concept of Critical Incident Stress Debriefings. This show wont make you an expert in this field, but it is a good introduction to something valuable that is rarely considered in the personal preparedness community. If summer makes you think of sailing and getting out on the water, you wont want to miss this weeks show. John visits with Teresa Carey, writer, educator and sailor. She knows about survival at sea. In 2008 Teresa moved aboard a small sailboat. During the following two years she sailed solo and lived aboard a 27 foot Norsea named Daphne with her cat Dory for company. Her focus was to live in concert with the ocean by enjoying its beauty and challenge, exploring simplicity, and drastically reducing her environmental impact. She began writing regularly for her blog titled Sailing Simplicity and the Pursuit of Happiness, which grew to inspire a large audience of simple livers, adventure-seekers, and dreamers and led to multiple keynote speaking engagements such as TEDx, National Womens Sailing Association, National Pocket Cruisers Convention, and Mystic Seaport Adventurer Series. Could this be a way of life for you? What parallels to prepping are there for the rest of us? Survival Gear & Supplies for Emergency Preparedness & Hard Times http://www.destinysurvival.com

In keeping with last weeks show about the basics, this week we will talk about water purification with one of the most knowledgeable subject matter experts in the business. Glen Meador is the inventor of the Survival Still, and comes from a family that runs one of the best water distillation companies in the world. Their products supply embassies worldwide with pure water free of any contamination. Glen took his knowledge of water purification and used it to design a non-electric, no moving part water distiller that can function anywhere. I personally own one and have shot several videos using it on rocket stoves, campfires, charcoal grills, and kitchen stoves. I have purified urine, salt water, pond water, muddy water, and have even pulled pure water from sweet tea and juice just to see what would happen. We talk about the mechanics of water, types of contaminates, methods of purifications, the FEMA and Red Cross purification suggestions, and of course the survival still itself. You can learn more about the survival still at survivalstill.com or on my website http://www.tngun.com/survival-still-review/ David Nash Owner of the Shepherd School and author of Understanding the Use of Handguns and the upcoming 52 Projects for a Self Reliant Life

Today David interviews innovator Dr. Tom Cannon who holds holds 21 different patents – from things such as the fiber optic connectors on the Patriot Missile system, to a bubble level device to help you perfect your golf swing – but today we talk about his ThriftyVac invention. Thirftyvac is a device for non-electric vacuum sealing of food using ordinary zip-lock type bags. The second I saw his video I knew I would back his project because it solves problems I have experienced and therefore makes my life easier. Dr. Cannons invention is currently being funded through Kickstarter.com. Kickstarter is a way for innovators to receive funds from consumers instead of venture capitalists – this way products either fail or succeed based upon what people want rather than how good a salesman you are. The kickstarter project for the Thirftyvac is already successful, enough has been raised to ensure his product will be produced. I am not having him on the show to help him, as much as to give you the opportunity to back the project and get the device plus other rewards sooner and at a lower cost than it will be available to the general public. His project will close on July 10th at 10:56am CDT, after that you will have to wait for it to be sold commercially. I approached Dr. Cannon because I believe that a non-electric vacuum sealer using regular ziplock bags is something the prepper community could use. I have not received anything in return for my endorsement. kickstarter/projects/1066541019/thriftyvac youtube

Beekeeping can be as simple or complex, as expensive or inexpensive as you make it. It just depends on what your goals, budget, and willingness to work. In today’s show, David talks about the basics of top bar beekeeping, a simple method of keeping bees that only requires a bare minimum of gear, and is well suited to the preparedness/self reliant lifestyle. There are some drawbacks to beekeeping this way, the most observable is that you get less honey and more wax than with “traditional” box style hives, but, as David explains, that may be a plus. This is a very valuable resource that preppers should not discount, as honey is invaluable both as a sweeter, a base for alcohol, and as a medicine. The wax also has hundreds of very important uses in its own right.
