Simply Simplifying

A wonderful article on voluntary simplicity by our newest guest contributor, Tess Pennington, who will be Doctor Prepper’s special guest Wednesday night at 8PM CDT on the Doctor Prepper show. There are times in your life when you realize that things are not as they should be. A vital component is missing in your day to day life, but you are unsure what it is. There is so much chaos and clutter spinning around you that nothing seems to make sense the way it used to.

You realize that the lifestyle to which you’ve become so accustomed is a necessary evil, a constant struggle between the life you want to achieve and the life you have to give up right now to achieve it. But you don’t have to live your life dreaming of what it could be – you can stop spinning and start simplifying right now!

It starts with a willingness to change and the willingness to realize that you need to get back to basics and focus on the things that matter most, not at hopefully achieving those things at some time in the future, but right now.

Shifting Your Direction

Those who live a stress filled life tend to be very familiar with the Three C’s: Chaos, Clutter and Confusion. It does not make for a happy existence. In fact, it drags you and your spirit down. In plain words, it’s toxic. In order to avoid this altogether, start making minor changes in your life to naturally shift your perspective. Peter Holy, founder of 123 Feel Better, calls them micro movements. The key to achieving your goals, according to 123 Feel Better, is to break your goals down into their smallest, most manageable parts. Where you may feel tired or overworked attempting to achieve a single, massive goal in one fell swoop, simplifying that goal into micro movements will seem like you’re hardly working.

Realizing that you want to take this journey towards simplicity requires some preemptive planning on your part. To begin this, you must find some time to reflect and think about what is important and how to enhance those priorities. For example, if family is a main priority, start scheduling a designated family time. The football game can wait. Or, if you have been putting off planning your off-grid home, sit down with the family and start planning what you want your homestead to incorporate. Nothing should interfere with those designated priorities. Here are some additional tips.

  • Sit down and contemplate the priorities in your life. What matters most in your life? What can you live without?
  • Set short and long term goals to get to your simplified destination.
  • Break down each goal and create micro movements, or mini-goals, that will help you to achieve success
  • Take actionand start integrating your micro movements into your daily life.

6 Practical Tips to Simplify Your Life

After shifting your direction toward simplifying your life, you will find that you only need a few things to really make you happy. Somehow in the middle of everything, you realize that whatever void you had in yourself before, filling it with superfluous products, services and habits often leaves you feeling just the opposite – unfulfilled.

Many are adopting this voluntary simplicity. In fact, trend researcher Gerald Celente has been quoted in saying that “between 5%-7% of adults are pursuing some type of voluntary simplicity.” It should be no surprise, then, that the percentage of those who are simplifying their lives are also the same percentage of individuals who are prepping. Preppers are already practicing living a more simplified lifestyle. Here are a few tips to help you begin your road to a simpler life:

  • Simplify your finances - Having debt creates a lot of unwanted stress and uneasiness in your life. Start making steps to live within your means and start paying off any unnecessary debt. Do some research into what credit solutions seem right for you. There are websites available that can give tips on how to reduce debt. Creating a manageable budget can also be an invaluable tip to reducing credit and stress.
  • Simplify your life- Get back to the basics and downsize your life. Start weeding out the areas in your life that cause you pain, suffering and confusion. Sometimes you have to weed out those toxic friends, stop hanging out late at night in order to get up early, learn to say “no” to people. Over-committing yourself can also cause a build up of chaos. Start prepping! Preparing for emergencies beforehand creates a safety cushion to fall back on in case an emergency arises. It eliminates the headache of gathering supplies in a high stress environment. There are plenty of sources to start your preparedness journey.
  • De-clutter Your Home and Office – It’s easy to have those organized “catch all piles” laying in strategic places around the house. But the more clutter that piles up, the more disorganized things are in your life. Clutter brings an uneasiness to life. Make a short term goal to clear these piles out. If you are not using these items, then throw them away, give them away or sell these items in a garage sale.
  • Simplify your health – Research has shown that stress takes it’s toll on a body. Those who live a stress free life are more inclined to live longer, be healthier and overall pleased with their life. So, start getting some fresh air every day. Additionally, cutting back on those greasy junk food items is another way to clean and detoxify your body.
  • Rely on yourself – What a great concept! By relying on yourself, you will find freedom. This is the threshold to prepping. Once you realize that you can be self reliant, everything changes. Your goals change, your attitude changes, you change.
  • Feed your spirit – This is often a highly overlooked area. If you do not feed your spirit on a regular basis, it will not grow. That is the missing component in most of our lives. We forget how important this is. Try and do something every week to be at one with your spirit. Some people meditate, some pray, some go to Nature to be in thought, some climb mountains – find what brings you peace and continue doing it. Because, without a spiritual foundation, we are lost.

The Time/Energy Yield

In the spin cycle we call life, we spend our time and energy on work and other distractions that keep us from doing what we need to thrive. Rather than spending our time on what’s important in life and sitting back in quiet thought, we have to entertain ourselves with thoughtless television programming, gossip websites or magazines, etc. It’s important to relax, but these activities will not relax you. They will only stimulate you into not moving or thinking. Your time/energy yield is not a positive reflection of what you are trying to accomplish. An example of good time/energy yield would be: rather than exchanging your time for excessive work at the office to generate more money to buy more food at the store; take that time, and rather than going to the office, spend that time building and developing a home vegetable garden. You will use your time and energy to not only fulfill your consumptive needs, but you will be feeding your spiritual, emotional and physical wellness needs at the same time.

Starting Fresh

It’s a new day where anything is possible. Simplifying your life will create more room for you to do what you need to be at peace. I’ve read stories of people who dreamed of living near the water. So, in order to save money, they sold their McMansion, their gas guzzler truck and bought a boat. They found a creative solution to their problem that ended up being the right decision not only for their stress load, but also for their spirit.

Making the realization to simplify does not mean that you are giving up your life in order to live a life of poverty. Quite the contrary, it means to getting rid of the non-essentials that cloud your life. By ridding yourself of these non-essentials, you begin to clear the distortion and haze, and begin concentrating on the important things in life. This sensible lifestyle creates a well balanced and harmonious living environment. Think of it, you are deliberately taking the reins and slowing down your life to actually give yourself the opportunity to look at the beauty and treasures surrounding you.

Keeping it Simple: Being a “Prepper” is Just Common Sense!

Leon Pantenburg, the newest guest contributor to Doctor Prepper’s Journal, thinks that being a “prepper” is just common sense!

“After all,” he says, “it is just common sense to plan for the future, regardless of what may or may not happen. That’s why we have retirement funds; car, home and health insurance and regular well-checks with the doctor. Planning ahead is also why you may stick an umbrella in your brief case, or carry a light jacket on a sunny day. And it would be stupid to not carry a spare tire and tools to change a flat!”

The same kind of common sense applies to planning for possible disasters or emergencies, whether natural or man-made. An assistant scoutmaster since 1991, Leon notes that “The Boy Scouts of America have been preaching the gospel of survival common sense for 100 years.”

In essence, being a prepper means proactively choosing to be a survivor instead of a victim, come what may.

“Most people never think about the need to survive anything,” says Leon, “but you, the average person, could easily be one slip, fall or crash away from real trouble.”

Leon recommends that in addition to any survival gear and supplies you may already have at home, that you “also make a compact, easy-to-carry wilderness and/or urban survival kit,” that you can grab and take with you wherever you go.

What will you put in that kit? Some common-sense items he suggests include a survival knife, first-aid kit, firemaking gear, a water bottle and water purification system of some kind, high-energy food bars and/or trail food, extra clothing, sun protection, a flashlight or headlamp, and a map and compass. Some crucial survival items can even be carried in your wallet!

“Finally,” Leon says, “apply the common sense filter to anything associated with your survival. Beware of ‘survival experts’ websites, TV shows and articles. Just because someone has a website, logo, book or magazine column doesn’t mean they know anything!”

Leon Pantenburg is an avid wilderness enthusiast and outdoorsman who been covering search and rescue, sheriff’s departments, floods, forest fires and other natural disasters and outdoor emergencies as a newspaperman and journalist for three decades. He has learned through his work that many people die unnecessarily in outdoor emergency situations when simple, common sense might have changed the outcome. He is now a man on a mission to help people take a “common sense” approach to averting and surviving potential disasters wherever and whenever they might happen.

Leon’s website, SurvivalCommonSense.com is about “proven and tested common sense survival techniques that anyone should learn when living in urban areas or wandering about in the wilderness. Using your common sense to survive any calamity can change a dangerous situation into a mere inconvenience.”

It’s as simple as that!

The Prepper Shaker: Getting Back to Basics

Concerned about the economy? I certainly am!

It’s time to get back to the basics. Yes, you know that, but perhaps you just need a reminder…

The great football legend, Vince Lombardi, on the first day of training camp would gather his tough, burly, seasoned football pros in a meeting, hold up a football and say, “Gentleman, this is a football.”

Getting back to basics means addressing your needs and the needs of your family, and examining what you need to do to be prepared for even worse conditions that are surely coming in the near future. It means getting your mind off all the “doom and gloom” and focusing on taking positive ACTION:

  • Recognize Reality––It’s time for some serious, no-holds-barred analysis of where you are in your personal and family preparedness.
  • Listen To Your Inner Self––Find out where you are in need of preparedness and how you can resolve the situation.
  • Devise Realistic Plans––Don’t bite off more than you can chew. Set attainable goals. Be realistic in your planning––financial as well as your other plans. Then, be diligent and persistent to reach your realistic goals.
  • Realize that preparedness is normal––and laudable. Optimize your budget now to include extra provisions for your family.

During WWII the popular song, “Accentuate the Positive, Eliminate the Negative…” was the mantra of an embattled nation. That advice is just as relevant today when considering your choices of what to do with your limited resources.

There’s no better time than RIGHT NOW to make preparedness for yourself and your family your first priority.

It’s as simple as that!

Prep Talk: The Dark Side of Zucchini Prosperity

Do you like zucchini? I do, especially when it’s fried in olive oil or mixed in with in other yummie veggies in one of my favorite Italian dishes.

Anyone who has successfully grown zucchini will tell you that that healthy zucchini plants are extremely prolific. Once they start producing they can easily overwhelm you with their bounty. Yes indeed: zucchini prosperity is such sweet bliss…especially if you have lots of friends with which to share it!

Did you know, though, that zucchini is susceptible to a fatal disease that can topple a seemingly healthy plant in just one day? It’s called “root rot.”

We all know that zucchini plants, like people, can die of dehydration (not enough water) in just a few days. Drought is a known killer–a disease of prolonged insufficiency.

Just the opposite happens with root rot, however. Due to excessive rain or overwatering by well-intentioned humans, the roots of a plant can get saturated (over-hydrated) with water to the point where they are no longer able to “breathe” properly and they die off, leaving the top of the plant without support or sustenance. On the surface it looks like sudden death: one day the plant seems fine, the next it’s a goner.

“Root rot” due to excess [water] consumption kills quickly. So if you are a zucchini plant, take notice!

Now…aren’t you glad we’re talking about zucchini and not about the economy? After all, people don’t have “roots,” do they?

Or DO they?

The Prepper Shaker: Simplify Your Life!

The essence of prepping is simplicity. If the doing of it seems too complicated, then you’re doing it wrong! It’s time to look at things from a new perspective.

From the Funny Farm: Noah Kidding!!!

Q: Who was the greatest financier in the Bible?

A: Noah. He was floating his stock while everyone else was in liquidation.

Q: The top story of the ark had windows to let light in, but how did Noah get light to the bottom two stories?

A: Wadda ‘ya think? He used floodlights!

Q: Where did Noah keep the bees?

A: In the Ark-hives, of course.

  • Make an extraordinarily good first impression so that people remember you in a positive way.
  • Render extraordinary service. Go the extra mile. Do more than is asked. That alone will set you apart from the rest of the crowd.
  • Be extraordinarily prompt. Arrive 15-20 minutes early for appointments and meetings. Answer your email and voicemail with extraordinary speed. Watch your prospects turn into extraordinarily loyal customers as a result.
  • Show extraordinary courtesy. Good manners, soft speech and kind words are in all too short supply nowadays. Let everyone know you have more than enough to go around for all.
  • Give extraordinary praise and thanks for all you receive. Be extraordinarily diligent in sending a personal “thank you” to each and every person who does you a good turn, no matter how small. Make an extraordinary donation to your church or favorite charity. Keep an attitude of gratitude about you and you’ll find yourself working more “in the zone” where you function at extraordinary levels of energy to produce extraordinary results in extraordinarily short periods of time.
  • Practice these 5 things every day, every hour, every minute until they become a habit, and you’ll be unstoppable!

    Doctor Prepper’s Weekly Prepper-Upper #14

    Prepping…in sickness or in health?

How important is health to a prepper?

    “In health there is freedom.
Health is the first of all liberties.”
    – Henri Frederic Amiel

The Prepper Shaker: TV or not TV?

Television is one of the greatest inventions of all time.
Yet, in its current state, TV produces more problems than
blessings. What effect does TV really have on our physical
and mental health, and why? This article by Chuck Gallozzi
is a “must-read” for every prepper!

    Prep Talk: Health or Wealth?

Are you in business for your health? If you aren’t, maybe you should be.

Yeah, I know the old saying: “I’m not in business for my health. I need to make money.” What good is money, though, if you don’t have the health to enjoy it?

How effective can you really be without good health? How much money can you really make?

In most cases what we call “lack of ambition” or “lack of motivation” stems directly from poor health. How many people will you contact; how many sales will you make today if you barely have enough ambition to get out of bed?

If the business or line of work you’re in doesn’t improve your health in some way (meaning your physical health, your mental health, your emotional health and/or your spiritual health), then maybe it’s time for a change.

Doctor Prepper Interviewed on TruthBeTold Radio

…and what an interview it was!

If you haven’t heard it yet,  you need to!

    Why?

Because James did this interview for YOU.

Let me share just a little of it to give you a taste of what you’re in for:

James said:  ”We go around criticizing people because they want to be prepared or they want to be, as they call themselves, survivalists–they don’t call themselves that–we call them that. We’re ALL “preppers;” we’re all preparing. People say, “I don’t prepare. I’m not a survivalist.” But, if you didn’t commit suicide today you MUST be a survivalist because you lived through it. That’s pretty basic. If you didn’t die today, you’re a survivalist.  So don’t go putting down the guys who just take it a little step further, who are a little more passionate, and want some rights. This is America. They have a right to do that. You have a right to put them down but they have a right to stand up for their rights.

“The other thing is, that we are all “preppers.” If someone says, “I’m not a prepper” I ask, “Do you have insurance on your car?” “Uh huh.” “Do you have insurance on your family?” “Well, sure!” “Do you have health insurance?” “Well, yes.” “Do you have life insurance?” “Of course!” “and, “Do you have a plan for putting your kids through college?” “Yes.” “Well–that’s the definition of a prepper! You’re preparing for the future!” And they look at you like deer in the headlights, because they didn’t think of it in those terms.

“See, we are a lot of the things we don’t think we are because we don’t think about it, and all I’m trying to urge people to do as an individual is save lives. My whole mission in life is to save lives. I wrote a book to help people be able to do that. I made one mistake: I didn’t print the book on rice paper using vitaminized ink. At least they could have had their last meal on me.”

Good grief! This guy (James) is funny as well as informative. :)

    Is Your Family Prepared?

Welcome back to Doctor Preppers Journal!

I’m going to Keep it Super Simple!

Is your family’s preparedness plan in place?

We’ve already seen a most unusual winter in the mid-central and northeastern US.

Oh, yeah, did I fail to mention the 2 major earthquakes within the last month? There will be many additional emergencies and disasters during the winter, spring, summer, and fall seasons to come.

Are you ready for the natural, people-caused, and those nasty personal emergencies and disasters that could likely occur in your life?

Take this 30-second test to find out!

    • Do you know to which natural, people-caused, or personal disasters your family is potentially vulnerable?
    • Have you planned how to eliminate or minimize the impact of these potential disasters on your family?
    • If you needed to evacuate your home right now, do you know where you would go for shelter?
    • If you were required to get away from potential harm immediately, do you know how much gasoline is in your vehicle’s gas tank at this moment?
    • If electricity were unavailable for an extended period, do you know how you would protect and cook your food, and provide heat and light?
    • If normal distribution of food to the grocery stores were curtailed, do you know what sources of food would be available to you?
    • Do you have at least a month’s supply of food in your home or in a safe place where you have control of it?
    • Would your typical lifestyle be altered if your normal source of income were interrupted for 2 weeks…or longer?
    • Do you have a year of house payments and/or some other financial reserves?
    • If someone in your family were injured and medical help were not readily available, do you know what medical resources would be available?

If you answered No! to any of these questions, then you need to reconsider your level of self-reliance!

If you answered Yes! to these questions, GREAT!

Now, go ask your neighbors if they’re prepared––if not, you may be their support after a disaster strikes!…

Preparedness…it’s what the smart people do!

    It’s as simple as that!

    Till next time…
